About the course


This qualification aims to train people to work safely as general hands-on infrastructure work sites, and gain work skills and hands-on experience. This qualification is intended for people commencing a career in the infrastructure works industry. You may be new to the industry, from school or another industry, or you may be working in the infrastructure industry without a qualification.

This programme is completed over eleven weeks full-time or up to six-months part-time (subject to VHNZ approval). Students will learn through a combination of eight days of face-to-face training, at least 286 hours work experience, and self-directed learning.

On completion trainees will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the health, safety, and environmental requirements to work safely and responsibly with others in and infrastructure works environment.
  • Follow instructions and organisational procedures to perform basic infrastructure work activities.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol in full-time or part-time study for this programme, applicants must:

  • Be aged 16 years or over.
  • Have access to appropriate supervised work on an infrastructure worksite to complete the relevant work experience requirements as verified by a VHNZ approved employer or supervisor.
  • Be physically fit and able to complete manual labour.
  • Have access to relevant tools and equipment; and have access to personal protective equipment relevant to an infrastructure workplace (This will be established through pre-course notification and a pre-enrolment interview).
