Did you know that from 2018, New Zealand students will be entitled to one year of free tertiary education? Two years for those doing an apprenticeship!

What is Fees Free Study?

New Zealanders who have done less than half a fulltime year of tertiary study will be eligible for fees-free study in 2018.

Education Minister, Chris Hipkins, announced on 5th December 2017 that the policy would offer high school students finishing school in 2017 one year of free tuition at a university, polytechnic, wānanaga or private college, or two years in an apprenticeship or industry training programme.

The government has also announced a $50/week increase to both student allowances and loan entitlements for living costs.

Who is eligible for Fees Free Study?

Students, apprentices and trainees will be eligible for fees-free study in 2018 onwards if they are:

  • Allowed to work and live in NZ permanently, or
  • An NZ or Australian resident who has lived in NZ for at least 3 years; and
  • Enrolling Fulltime; and
  • Not enrolled in school when your tertiary course starts, and either;
  • Have been enrolled at high school in 2017 or 2018, or
  • Have not undertaken previous study/training of more than 60 credits, and Except during school
  • Enrol in an eligible qualification.

Which qualifications are eligible for Fees Free?

Eligible courses for fees-free study, are courses that:

  • Start in 2018; and
  • Funded by the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission);
  • Recognised by NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority);
  • NZQF Level 3 or above, and/or
  • At least 120 credits (for industry training only).
